The Anti-Turkish Fortress was build in two periods. Old Fortress was built on the foundation of an old castle. The construction of the Old Fortress began in 1549. In 1658 the extension of the Old Fortress, the New Fortress’ building process began. The expansion of the fortification system was a reaction to the fall of Nové Zámky in 1663. The New Fortress consisted of 5 bastions, 3 western and 2 eastern connecting to the Old Fortress. The 3 western bastions were connected by 2 ravelins – the southern one guarded the entrance into the New Fortress, The Leopold Gate.
